Theatre personalities agreed that the effects of technology, economics, politics and society had affected the art of drama today.
The discussion was held at Kuvikam Ilakkiy Avaasal,a literature and history forum at T. Nagar on Sunday.
“Do not read only your dialogues, read all people’s dialogues”, said Anandarao Baskar, a dramatist based on his experience with playwrights such as Gnani Sankaran and Cho Ramaswamy.
Baskar also pointed out that people were not seeing dramas due to social media.
Political comparisons were made between the present era and the 80’s. The famous play on freebies given in elections, “Aaapu Ku Aaapu” was a sold-out show in 1989.
The roles of M.Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa were played by dramatists, Ravi and Devi respectively. The audience who were confused to vote for either AIADMK or DMK ended up voting for None of the Above (NOTA) in the state elections in 1989, disclosed Baskar.
