Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with US President Donald Trump will be addressing a joint rally named “Howdy, Modi!” in Houston on September 22 at 10 am (local time). More than 50,000 Indian-Americans from across the US have registered for this mega event to be held in the NRG Stadium.

Modi and Trump have a lot in common among them, which is why reams have been written about the chemistry they share. The rise of Modi in 2014 and Trump in 2016 heralded the coming to power of right-wing political parties. Both belong to the right-wing parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India and the Republican Party in the US respectively. Many think they are believers of free market/capitalism. They have been criticised of being anti-minority  and anti-immigration.

Modi has experience of working in the government as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014, whereas, Trump was a businessman and he lacked experience in politics which his predecessors had.  Their working style has always been a topic of discussion. Both leaders are among the most followed personalities on social media.

In a statement, White House Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisham said the event will be a “great opportunity to emphasize the strong ties between the people of the US and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies, and to discuss ways to deepen their energy and trade relationship”. The Houston meet will be the third meeting between Modi and Trump this year. The two leaders last met at the G7 summit in France in August and on the sidelines of the G20 meet in Osaka in June.

This is for the first time that an Indian Prime Minister will attending a joint event with the US President. The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott said, “It was an honor to meet Prime Minister Modi on my trip to India last year, and I look forward to his visit to Texas which will further build upon our strong economic and cultural partnership.”

Prime Minister Modi tweeted, President Trump joining him at the event was a special gesture. In another tweet, he said, he is looking forward to the event.

The organisers of this event, Texas India Forum released an official statement on Twitter yesterday saying  President Trump will be addressing the event. The Texas India Forum said, “‘Howdy Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures’ Community Summit attendees represent 48 states, coming together to emphasize the shared values and aspirations of two great nations whose partnership is important to global peace, prosperity, and human progress.”

Howdy is way of friendly greeting in the United States which means how do you do?
