The cinema viewers of the nation have been hit with the news of abrupt retirement of the extremely gifted & popular Bollywood actor, Zaira Wasim. The Kashmiri-born actor, who rose to fame through the move Dangal (2016), has announced the decision through her various social media platforms. She attributes the decision solely to the growing resentment about her work interfering with her religion and faith. In Ms. Wasim’s words , “though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here” and “I was constantly battling with my soul to reconcile my thoughts and instincts to fix a static picture of my imaan and I failed miserably, not just once but a hundred times…”. There has been wide speculation among the public that she may have been pressurized into choosing the same by religious bodies or that her social media handles could be hacked. But the rumours have been put to rest by Ms. Wasim herself who reiterated that the decision has been entirely her own.
Despite the clarity of the announcement, the decision has sparked the popular debate about religious beliefs interfering with art. Many of those in the film fraternity particularly have not held back from displaying their shock or surprise. The reactions have been mixed though with many advocating her freedom of choice but others pointing out the message this sends out in the bigger picture. While most of her fans and colleagues wish her the best for her future, the popular opinion has been that the decision has been hugely disappointing.
It's your life. Do whatever you want. Wish you only the best for your future. I believe our art and our profession is our life. We fight to keep religion out of it. It doesn't belong here. If your religion made you do this, maybe you didn't belong here after all. "Godspeed". https://t.co/niXdrxL6qk
