France was the only other country to bid for the tournament but the highest governing body of football in the world gave the rights to India after their council meeting in Miami. The dates and venues for the tournament are yet to be announced. This will be the seventh edition of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, and the second in Asia after Jordan hosted the 2016 edition
The ALL India Football Federation (AIFF) had expressed its interest to host the tournament in 2018, a year after the country successfully hosted the Under-17 Men’s World Cup.
India’s place in the FIFA (senior) women’s team ranking is 62. Among AFC nations, they are ranked 12th.
The U-17 tournament began in 2008, and was hosted by New Zealand. Spain beat Mexico 2-1 in the final in Uruguay last year.
Mr. Kushal Das, General Secretary, All India Football Federation described it as a “historic moment” for Indian Football.
