Not above the NRC

The Assam government said today that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to the Supreme Court-monitored National Register of Citizens (NRC) amounted to “contempt of court”.

Mohan Patowary, spokesperson for the Assam government said that Ms. Banerjee’s allegations against the final draft were baseless.

Banerjee has said that the NRC will lead to “civil war and bloodbath in the country” after the final draft excluded 40 lakh applicants.

Trump on Republic Day?

The Times of India reported on Friday that the invitation for Trump had been sent in April.

The White House has also  confirmed that an official invitation has been extended to US President Donald Trump to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2019.


Trump making a visit for Republic Day would help the two governments dispel the notion that relations have started to drift. The US postponed the ‘2+2’ dialogue at the last minute as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had to travel to North Korea on July 6.

As part of Western Railways’ cleanliness drive, passengers can now click pictures of filth and dirt at railway stations, and send it across to a dedicated team of authorities on popular mobile messaging platform WhatsApp. Numbers were assigned to the five divisions of Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, and Ratlam.

Citing the increase of theft, robbery and crimes against women on trains, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has sought permission from the Railway Ministry to widen their powers to include filing FIRs and investigating cases.

Meanwhile, several new Railway lines are to be introduced across the country. The number of railway lines in each state was given by Minister of State of Railways, Rajen Gohain. The completion of these projects requires  various clearances from State Government departments and Central Ministries.
