Sridevi died of ‘accidental drowning’ not heart attack, says forensic report

DUBAI: The mortal remains of Bollywood actor Sridevi are expected to reach India on Tuesday, as authorities in Dubai continue a probe into the shocking death of India’s first female superstar. Sridevi died of “accidental drowning” in her Dubai hotel bathtub on Saturday, local police have said.The embalming process is expected to be carried out Tuesday after which the family would be allowed to bring the actor home, reports have said.

Boney Kapoor was taken in for the third round of questioning after forensic reports stating that Bollywood actor Sridevi had a deep wound at the back of her head came out, said a report by Asianet News.

3.30pm: Sridevi’s body handed over to kin. Body to be taking for embalming.

1.40pm: Investigators in Dubai are looking into the circumstances of actor Sridevi’s death and have already spoken to hotel staff after taking husband Boney Kapoor’s statement. The official position is that the body will be released only after all questions are answered, reported India Today.

1.22pm: Kapoor family releases statement: “Arjun has gone to Dubai this morning to be with his father at the hotel while the formalities are being wrapped up and to oversee the return journey. We will keep you posted with further updates when we receive more information from the family. Thank you”

1.10pm: Ram Gopal Varma has written a note in which he talks about Sridevi’s early life as an actor in Bollywood.

1.00pm: Arjun Kapoor to leave for Dubai to help his father and family. He is Boney’s son from his first marriage to Mona Shourie.

12.55pm: Officials from the Consulate General of India in Dubai and Sridevi’s family members are still waiting for a clearance from the Dubai Public Prosecution. Reports say the clearance may come soon now.

12.30pm: Sanjay Kapoor’s wife Maheep Kapoor reaches Anil Kapoor’s residence where Sridevi’s daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, are also staying.

India’s Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri tweeted, “The media interest in untimely demise of Sridevi is understandable. But the frenzy of speculation does not help. Imp to note that: We are working with local authorities to ensure that mortal remains can be sent to India at the earliest. We are on the job.”

“We are in regular contact with the family of Sridevi and other well-wishers. We share their pain.  Our experience in similar cases tells us that it does take 2-3 days to complete processes. We leave it to the experts to determine cause of demise Let’s be responsible,” added Suri

The Dubai government said in a tweet that the police have transferred the case to the “Dubai Public Prosecution” which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.

“Following the completion of post-mortem analysis, Dubai police headquarters today stated that the death of the Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment’s bathtub following loss of consciousness,” the Dubai government’s media office said on Twitter.

It is not clear what caused Sridevi, 54, to lose consciousness, and whether the initial report of her death due to cardiac arrest still holds. Her death, which was first reported at around 3am on Sunday in India, sent shock waves across the country with those who knew her at a loss to explain how she could have suffered cardiac arrest at such a young age.

Sridevi was in Dubai for a family wedding and had stayed back after the ceremonies. Her husband had flown back to Mumbai with their younger daughter Khushi, but he had returned to Dubai to surprise her, according to Khaleej Times.

He was reportedly in the room when Sridevi went to the bathroom to get ready for a dinner, according to Khaleej Times. It said Kapoor discovered her unconscious in the bathtub filled with water. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Sridevi is survived by her husband, filmmaker Boney Kapoor and two daughters.
