Dawood kin, Iqbal arrested for extortion; Police suspect neta-gangster nexus

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s younger brother, Iqbal Kaskar was arrested by a team of Anti-Extortion Cell of the Thane Police Crime Branch led by Sr. Police Inspector Pradeep Sharma on charges of extorting money from builders.

Sharma, a controversial encounter specialist, earlier received a tip-off of about a dispute between contractors and builders related to the underworld about a dispute between contractors and builders related to the underworld. Also many other builders belonging from Mulund and Ulhasnagar areas of Mumbai submitted a complaint to the Thane Police about various extortion threats by Kaskar under Dawood’s name  An arrest warrant was issued for Kaskar and on Monday, he was arrested from his sister Haseena’s house in Nagpada area in South Mumbai.

Kaskar along with his close aide and two other associates  have also been booked under section 383 of the Indian Penal Code. Commissioner of Police (Thane) Parambir Singh told in a press briefing that they are also investigating Dawood’s involvement in the extortion case. The police also also mentioned the alleged involvement of local politicians, including Municipal Corporators which are being probed. “The Dawood gang was running the extortion racket who were also backed by some builders,” added Singh. Iqbal was brought to court today

Earlier this month, Kaskar was served a notice to vacate two dilapidated buildings,namely the Damarwala Building in Bhendi Bazaar and Shabnam Guest House in JJ Marg area after they were declared illegal acquisitions under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act of 1976. Iqbal was previously charged with a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case where he was acquitted in 2007.
