Chennai , March 16: Corporation road near OMR in Perungudi poses a challenge to motorists
due to its poor condition. The 500-metre – long road is a key residential link to the people in
Perungudi area .
The corporation road has a total of 8 drainage pipelines from OMR To STP( sewage treatment
plant) in Perungudi . The total length of the pipeline is 640 meter . “Given the size of the pipeline
more time is needed for its repair”, said an official at the Greater Chennai corporation.
“ I moved to the area in 2019 , since then the road has not been repaired. During the monsoons
the entire area gets flooded making it difficult for pedestrians to walk. Many two-wheelers have
met with accidents during monsoon when the big potholes are full of sludge “, said Lalitha , a
resident .
Upon speaking to the office of Assistant engineer in Chennai corporation it was revealed that
the road is damaged due to undergoing sewage and drainage pipeline work underneath. “ The
road cannot be repaired until the sewage work gets completed. Due to the huge pipelines, the
sewage work is getting delayed”, said the Assistant engineer, public work department, Chennai
corporation, .

“ The road cannot be repaired until the drainage sewage work is completed as it hampers the
road re-lay . Digging up the road each time to lay pipelines is a waste of taxpayer money as it
takes huge amounts of funds to reconstruct the road. Hence the road cannot be repaired
despite receiving multiple complaints as the corporation cannot proceed until it gets a ‘noobjection- certificate’ from the government “, said Sharath Vigneesh, the assistant engineer in
Greater Chennai corporation.
According to the residents, continuous movement of heavy vehicles carrying sewage waste has
worsened the condition of the road. “It is due to the frequent plying of trucks and sewage
tankers that the road has become very dusty and noisy affecting the health of people living
nearby”, said a resident .
“ I have been delivering food in this area for quite some time now but due to the broken road I
am taking a longer route . This is affecting my time and profit” , said Mr Sethu Pathi , a tiffin
vendor .
